The existence of an exclusive hideaway for the country’s
movers and shakers where secret deals were done in private luxury first exploded into the public eye back in 2007.
Back then, the fact that Qantas spent hundreds of thousands of dollars wining and dining the nation’s political elite in ultra-exclusive VIP
lounges was relatively unknown.
It was a time before Alan Joyce’s tenure as the CEO
of Qantas had even started, when he was boss of the comparatively lowly budget airline, Jetstar.
And unlike Anthony Albanese’s current slide in the polls
leading up to an election in next year, the prospects back in 2007 were rosy for Labor.
The election that was looming was the ‘Kevin 07’ landslide that would see Kevin Rudd become prime minister and John Howard lose his
own seat.
The issue which blew open the ‘guilty secret’ of the Chairman’s Lounge then wasn’t about a prime minister’s privileges, although John Howard and Kevin Rudd were certainly both members during their terms as PM.
But when broadcaster Steve Price – himself a long time Chairman’s Lounge member – revealed a
politically charged remark made within the club’s hallowed walls, the cat was out of the bag.
The political revelation – a comment by ex-rock star turned senator Peter Garrett that Labor would change the policies it campaigned on if it won government
– did not deter his party from romping in on election day.
In contrast, the scandal currently engulfing Anthony Albanese about his Chairman’s Lounge membership and that of his ex-wife Carmel Tebbutt, and their son Nathan could
bring down the prime minister.

The existence of the lounge was so little known back in 2007 that in defending his disclosure of Garrett’s remark,
Steve Price had to explain what the private enclave actually was.
In a first person piece he wrote: ‘The Chairman’s Lounge is a separate frequent flyers lounge away from the crowded
normal Qantas Club.
‘As its name implies, the people given access to it are approved by the Qantas chairman,
Margaret Jackson.
‘I have been a Chairman’s Lounge member since 2002.’
In his opinion piece, Price also revealed TV entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins was also a member
of lounge.
Wilkins had also been inside at the time and was his only witness to the remark Price said Garrett had made.
Other prominent media figures, such as 60 Minutes reporters, actors and
performers, and well-known writers and sports people are
said to be among the lounge’s exclusive membership of around
6000.
Price went on to defend himself for reporting what some
claimed was a confidential conversation in a private place, but which exposed him to criticism
over his own membership for allegedly promoting Qantas on his radio show.

The report noted that politicians declaring membership of the lounge ‘which most of their spouses got too’ in their pecuniary interests that
year included Liberal MPs of the day, Philip Ruddock, Bob
Baldwin and Andrew Southcott.
Labor MPs with lounge privileges included Tanya Plibersek, Bob McMullan, and Sharon Grierson, and Martin Ferguson declared a bottle of Grange
hermitage as a gift from Qantas, as did Liberal, Christopher Pyne.
Asked if all MPs got the captain’s pick from Geoff Dixon, the airline’s spokesperson told Nine: ‘We like to retain a bit of mystery. Membership is by invitation only and it is reviewed periodically.’
Fast forward to today, and nearly every single federal politician in the country has accepted free membership of the controversial, invitation-only
lounge with one even describing it as an ‘entitlement’.
Qantas and the Albanese government recently denied
the ‘very, very high-end perk’ gives the airline a disproportionate level of influence over the country’s politicians.
They were commenting ahead of the launch of the new
book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review
columnist Joe Aston, which has stirred up the controversy.
A Daily Mail Australia audit of the members’ interest registers – in both Federal
Parliament’s House of Representatives and the Senate – revealed almost 93 per cent of the nation’s leaders have been ‘gifted’ membership to the lavish,
all-inclusive lounge.
Mr Albanese has defended himself by saying he declared all his benefits in pecuniary interest statements.
At a press conference this week, he repeated that all of his upgrades ‘have been declared
as appropriate. What’s appropriate is transparency.’
Apart from the PM, members include every one of his 22-person Cabinet, his seven-person Outer Ministry and all 12
assistant ministers.

still a member and so is Teal MP, Zali Steggall.
Last year it was reported that Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairwoman Gina
Cass-Gottlieb and Australian Securities and Investments Commission chairman Joe Longo and
some of their deputies are members of the Chairman’s Lounge despite regulating the airline.
Senior public servants in the club included Department of Prime
Minister and Cabinet secretary Glyn Davis, deputy secretaries Nadine Williams, Liz Hefren-Webb,
Rachel Bacon and ambassador to Beijing, Scott Dewar.
Other Qantas freebies bestowed on members include numerous business
class flight upgrades, model Qantas aircrafts, frequent flyer points, and tickets to sporting and entertainment events.
Touted as ‘the most exclusive club in the
country’, membership to the Chairman’s Lounge is still veiled in secrecy.

the Prime Minister on the controversial decision to lock competitor
Qatar Airways out of domestic routes.

Anthony Albanese fires up and launches a brutal personal attack on book author
Reports have emerged in a new book Mr Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy from Qantas and he would liaise personally with
the former airline boss for them.
Aston also alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce while in his various parliamentary jobs to ask for special upgrades for
himself or his family.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights Mr
Albanese received upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included
overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu, with
some being for holidays.
Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that the London flights was for work purposes
and all were ‘declared in the appropriate way’.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has leapt on the accusations describing Mr Albanese as being the ‘best friend’ of Mr Joyce.
Mr Dutton told Sky News on Monday night it was ‘strange’ Mr Albanese had
directly contacted Mr Joyce to request upgrades while holding a regulatory position in the transport sector.
‘If you’re the Transport Minister and you’re picking up
the phone to one of the most important stakeholders in the portfolio asking for a free upgrade,
then again, I think the Prime Minister would be able to answer
those questions more effectively than anyone else because I’m
not aware of anyone else having done it,’ Mr Dutton said.
It has since emerged that Ms Haydon also has membership of the Qantas Chairman’s
Lounge
The Prime Minister denied frequently asking Mr Joyce
for upgrades on Tuesday at press conference in the NSW city of Newcastle.
‘The only discussions that I can recall with Alan Joyce certainly were not discussed through calls
– we discussed the first flight from Australia to Dubai on the
A380,’ he said.
‘I’ve declared everything in accordance with all of the rules.’
Aston was asked on Monday night by ABC interviewer
Sarah Ferguson about how confident he was that Mr Albanese had made calls personally to Mr Joyce for upgrades.
‘I am very comfortable with my sourcing,’ Aston said.
Asked whether he thought Mr Albanese had been influenced by Mr Joyce’s lobbying
to block UAE airline Qatar domestically Aston said it was ‘implausible’ to
think that the Prime Minister’s office had nothing to do with the
decision.
Mr Albanese’s son Nathan, 24, has reportedly also been granted access to

‘It’s very hard to imagine a decision of any political sensitivity in the
Albanese government that would not go through the Prime Minister’s office,’ Aston replied.
He noted the opening up of the Australian domestic market Qatar
had seemingly been sailing through with Transport Minister Catherine
King speaking warmly about the proposal until ‘everything changed’ to
stop it dead in tracks.
Ms King repeatedly denied in parliament the decision to block Qatar
was due to Qantas lobbying her or any Labor colleagues.
Despite Mr Albanese claiming he declared every upgrade received from Qantas
the Australian Financial Review reported on Tuesday that he failed to
do for his former wife Carmel Tebbutt when the two traveled together.

‘This is all a question of integrity. Most Australians
struggle to afford even an economy airfare. They’d never be
able to afford the luxury of business class.
It’s out of our reach,’ she said.
‘Can Albanese truly be impartial when it comes to making decisions about Qantas when he’s been getting tens
of thousands of dollars worth of free upgrades to business class?
The revelations puts the decision he made as transport minister
and prime minister under a cloud.
‘Aside from the integrity issues, this revelation is also politically lethal.
Albanese took care to curate a self-image of
a housing commission boy who made it. But now the perception is cementing of
a long-term pollie enjoying the perks of public office.’
Another awkward paradox of Mr Albanese’s apparent close
relationship with Mr Joyce is that the Labor leader in a trade unionist
advocate while Qantas attempted to break the power of the Transport Workers Union by sacking 1700 staff during Covid.
The sacking has since been ruled illegal by Federal Court
in a case brought by the union with Qantas facing possible hundreds of thousands in compensation payouts.
The friendship however did find one perhaps unlikely defender in semi-retired 3AW radio star Neil Mitchell.

Mitchell wrote on X.
‘But does anybody believe he was seriously compromised by having
Alan Joyce as a bestie? Time to rewrite rules governing politicians.’

MPs are banned from accruing frequent flyer points on taxpayer-funded trips like ordinary Aussies can, but they
can can receive lifetime status credits, which allows access to
airport lounges and flight upgrades.
‘How else can one explain the extraordinary dominance of Qantas in securing bookings
by parliamentarians and their staff?’ Myriam Robin wrote
in an opinion piece for the Australian Financial Review.
‘There’s nothing like accruing status credits on someone else’s
dime.’
Transport Minister Catherine King has since committed to a review of flight bookings by government officials which will be conducted
by the Department of Finance this year, despite there being just two
months left of 2024.

A Daily Mail Australia audit of the members’ interest registers – in both the House of Representatives and
the Senate – revealed almost 93 per cent of the nation’s leaders have
been ‘gifted’ membership to the lavish,

‘It was a very special experience,’ she told People in the
clip. ‘I had never seen a world created like that before.’

in the upcoming film.
‘She easily slipped into that world. It’s not like she’s trying to be

Folie À Deux made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival

Jack Miller believes he is lucky to have walked away from
a horror crash on the opening lap of MotoGP’s Malaysian Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit on Sunday.
The Australian motorcycle star was left thanking his lucky
stars after his early crash on Sunday as his racing helmet struck the rear
tyre of Fabio Quartararo’s Yamaha before Joan Mir’s Honda then ran over his legs.
The accident happened on the opening lap after the Queenslander’s
Red Bull KTM got tangled up with his teammate Brad Binder, and it
ended up leaving the 29-year-old motionless on the track while Binder and Quartararo were able to walk away from the red-flagged scene.

There was huge relief all around the circuit as Miller was rushed to the medical centre at the
arena and pictures flashed up later of the ever popular Aussie
walking back to the garage.
“Lucky to walk away from that one today. Thank you to everyone for the kind messages,” Miller later wrote on Instagram, also reporting to
Mir that he had suffered only a bruised leg.
Red Bull KTM said in a statement later: “Today was a stark reminder of the risks our riders face every time they line up on the grid.
“Both Brad and Jack were involved in a serious incident on the first lap,
but we’re beyond grateful they’re both okay and walking away
from the crash relatively unharmed.”
Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia went on to win the race ahead of Jorge Martin, whose lead over the Italian is now 24 points ahead of the season’s final race.

Of the three involved in the crash, Quartararo was the only one to restart with a spare bike, as he came home sixth.
“I had a big touch with Brad or Jack, then I was flying and after that I don’t really remember.
Those things can happen,” he said.
Mir admitted he had been worried when he saw the ambulance on the track with medics treating Miller.
“I didn’t know how he was, I ran over his legs and I was worried
for him,” Mir said.
“I went to his box (after the race) and he said, ‘No, I’m fine, I’m fine’.”
Miller’s crash was the latest setback in what has been a disappointing season for the four-time race winner, as he lies 14th in the championship standings.

remember reeling out of a morning screening,
dazzled less by the unforgiving glare of the Venetian sun than by the
movie we’d just been shown.

Last night, here in Venice, came the world premiere of the sequel, Joker: Folie a Deux The
director is again Todd Phillips, with Joaquin Phoenix once more in the title role,
this time joined by Lady Gaga as what I suppose we must call the love interest, although that would undervalue her wonderful
performance.
The film is audaciously different in style from the original, not quite as electrifying,
but bold and brilliant all the same.
It begins with a kind of sinister jauntiness with a Joker animation in the style of a Tom & Jerry cartoon, to show that since
the events of the first movie, Arthur Fleck along with his murderous alter ego has become a cultural phenomenon in Gotham City.
There has even been a TV movie about him.

But Arthur is behind bars, waiting to see whether he will be judged sane enough to stand trial for murder, and
in the meantime enjoying his celebrity status both with fellow
prisoners and even the warders, one of whom, a sadistic Irishman played by Brendan Gleeson, feeds him cigarettes in return for jokes.
Lady Gaga plays Lee, a fellow inmate on her way, we suppose, to becoming Joker’s girlfriend Harley Quinn.
The pair hit it off at a music therapy class,
and are soon mutually smitten, but Lee makes it clear that she loves the dangerously charismatic Joker,
‘clown prince of crime’, not the gloomily introspective Arthur.
Indeed, identity confusion is the theme of this film, which delves even deeper than the original into schizophrenia and other types of mental illness.
It’s been said that Folie a Deux is a musical. It’s not, but music looms large as an expression of Arthur and Lee’s burgeoning love for one another.
It is while watching Vincente Minnelli’s 1953 classic The Band Wagon that Lee, who claims to have been imprisoned for arson, sets fire to their prison wing.
The ensuing chaos provides an excellent opportunity to escape, yet
Phillips and his co-writer Scott Silver toy with our expectations throughout;
each time we anticipate which way the narrative is going to go, it confounds us by wheeling off in another direction.
The music is a constant, though, with Lady Gaga giving her
interpretation of lovely old Burt Bacharach
and even Motown numbers, and Phoenix more than holding his own. There are also a couple of swooning dance
routines that make Arthur and Lee look like psychotic versions of Ryan Gosling and Emma
Stone in La La Land.
Eventually, after Arthur’s high-profile TV appearance with
a smug interviewer played by Steve Coogan, it is time for the trial, with all of Gotham gripped by the subject of multiple personality
disorder.
Is Arthur the defendant accused of five murders, or is it Joker?
His kindly lawyer (Catherine Keener) wants to make clear it
is Arthur; Lee just as urgently wants him to identify as Joker.

For those cinema-goers who consider Joker: Folie a Deux to be just another unnecessary Batman spin-off, you should maybe think again
All this is compellingly directed by Phillips, and superbly acted by Phoenix especially, in a
role for which he seems custom-made, but by Gaga too.
We’ve known since A Star is Born in 2018 that she can act, but she really
is terrific in a bad-girl role. They’d have loved her at St Trinians.
As for those cinema-goers who consider Joker: Folie a Deux to be
just another unnecessary Batman spin-off, you should maybe think
again.
This might not quite be in the top rank of films about
mental illness, alongside all-time greats such as Psycho and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
But it’s not too far off.

movers and shakers where secret deals were done in private luxury first exploded into the public eye back in 2007.
Back then, the fact that Qantas spent hundreds of thousands of dollars wining and dining the nation’s political elite in ultra-exclusive VIP
lounges was relatively unknown.
It was a time before Alan Joyce’s tenure as the CEO
of Qantas had even started, when he was boss of the comparatively lowly budget airline, Jetstar.
And unlike Anthony Albanese’s current slide in the polls
leading up to an election in next year, the prospects back in 2007 were rosy for Labor.
The election that was looming was the ‘Kevin 07’ landslide that would see Kevin Rudd become prime minister and John Howard lose his
own seat.
The issue which blew open the ‘guilty secret’ of the Chairman’s Lounge then wasn’t about a prime minister’s privileges, although John Howard and Kevin Rudd were certainly both members during their terms as PM.
But when broadcaster Steve Price – himself a long time Chairman’s Lounge member – revealed a
politically charged remark made within the club’s hallowed walls, the cat was out of the bag.
The political revelation – a comment by ex-rock star turned senator Peter Garrett that Labor would change the policies it campaigned on if it won government
– did not deter his party from romping in on election day.
In contrast, the scandal currently engulfing Anthony Albanese about his Chairman’s Lounge membership and that of his ex-wife Carmel Tebbutt, and their son Nathan could
bring down the prime minister.
The exclusive Qantas Chairman’s Lounge (above) has been a well-kept secret for years, but it exploded into the public
conscience in 2007 as the result of a political furore
Broadcaster Steve Price revealed he had been a Chairman’s Lounge member since 2002 during
a row before the 2007 election won by Kevin Rudd which let the cat out of the bag about
the VIP club
The existence of the lounge was so little known back in 2007 that in defending his disclosure of Garrett’s remark,
Steve Price had to explain what the private enclave actually was.
In a first person piece he wrote: ‘The Chairman’s Lounge is a separate frequent flyers lounge away from the crowded
normal Qantas Club.
‘As its name implies, the people given access to it are approved by the Qantas chairman,
Margaret Jackson.
‘I have been a Chairman’s Lounge member since 2002.’
In his opinion piece, Price also revealed TV entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins was also a member
of lounge.
Wilkins had also been inside at the time and was his only witness to the remark Price said Garrett had made.
Other prominent media figures, such as 60 Minutes reporters, actors and
performers, and well-known writers and sports people are
said to be among the lounge’s exclusive membership of around
6000.
Price went on to defend himself for reporting what some
claimed was a confidential conversation in a private place, but which exposed him to criticism
over his own membership for allegedly promoting Qantas on his radio show.
Back in 2007, Alan Joyce (left) was boss of the
comparatively lowly budget airline Jetstar, and then Qantas CEO Geoff Dixon (right)
had the power over who made the cut to the Chairman’s Lounge
One observer has described the relationship bet6ween leading
politicians such as PM Anthony Albanese and the former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce (above) as
‘alarmingly cosy’
‘Why on earth is Qantas giving a controversial shock jock
membership of its Chairman’s Lounge, which is supposedly
to enable our elite politicians and business leaders
some privacy from the hoi polloi?’ demanded Crikey reporter Stephen Mayne at the time.
‘The Chairman’s Lounge is meant to be all about discretion and
confidentiality,’ he said, accusing Price of breaking ‘a confidence’.
The following year, before he was succeeded as Qantas CEO by Alan Joyce, Geoff Dixon was
the sole gatekeeper of entry into the club’s hushed confines.
Qantas Chairman’s Lounge membership was ‘so exclusive that you have
to be personally invited by the airline’s chieftain’,
Nine newspapers reported in 2008.
‘A marvellous benefit of lounge membership is that the mega rich
and powerful avoid having to mingle with the riffraff who will be
travelling cattle class.
‘Having said that, members of the ultra-exclusive club have included Pauline Hanson.
‘Another lounge member is Brad Cooper, who is
currently enjoying a prolonged exposure to cattle-class in Kirkconnell Correctional Centre.’ (Cooper was the former HIH insurance executive
jailed for eight years on fraud and bribery offences).

The ‘scandal’ currently engulfing Anthony Albanese about
his Chairman’s Lounge membership and that of his ex-wife Carmel Tebbutt, and their son Nathan could bring down the prime minister (above the PM with partner Jodie Haydon and ex-Qantas CEO Alan Joyce)
The report noted that politicians declaring membership of the lounge ‘which most of their spouses got too’ in their pecuniary interests that
year included Liberal MPs of the day, Philip Ruddock, Bob
Baldwin and Andrew Southcott.
Labor MPs with lounge privileges included Tanya Plibersek, Bob McMullan, and Sharon Grierson, and Martin Ferguson declared a bottle of Grange
hermitage as a gift from Qantas, as did Liberal, Christopher Pyne.
Asked if all MPs got the captain’s pick from Geoff Dixon, the airline’s spokesperson told Nine: ‘We like to retain a bit of mystery. Membership is by invitation only and it is reviewed periodically.’
Fast forward to today, and nearly every single federal politician in the country has accepted free membership of the controversial, invitation-only
lounge with one even describing it as an ‘entitlement’.
Qantas and the Albanese government recently denied
the ‘very, very high-end perk’ gives the airline a disproportionate level of influence over the country’s politicians.
They were commenting ahead of the launch of the new
book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review
columnist Joe Aston, which has stirred up the controversy.
A Daily Mail Australia audit of the members’ interest registers – in both Federal
Parliament’s House of Representatives and the Senate – revealed almost 93 per cent of the nation’s leaders have been ‘gifted’ membership to the lavish,
all-inclusive lounge.
Mr Albanese has defended himself by saying he declared all his benefits in pecuniary interest statements.
At a press conference this week, he repeated that all of his upgrades ‘have been declared
as appropriate. What’s appropriate is transparency.’
Apart from the PM, members include every one of his 22-person Cabinet, his seven-person Outer Ministry and all 12
assistant ministers.

On the Coalition side of parliament, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, deputy leader David Littleproud and former deputy Barnaby Joyce are also among the swathes of politicians who have disclosed they have taken up free membership to the contentious club.
Bill Shorten is a member, Tanya Plibersek is
still a member and so is Teal MP, Zali Steggall.
Last year it was reported that Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairwoman Gina
Cass-Gottlieb and Australian Securities and Investments Commission chairman Joe Longo and
some of their deputies are members of the Chairman’s Lounge despite regulating the airline.
Senior public servants in the club included Department of Prime
Minister and Cabinet secretary Glyn Davis, deputy secretaries Nadine Williams, Liz Hefren-Webb,
Rachel Bacon and ambassador to Beijing, Scott Dewar.
Other Qantas freebies bestowed on members include numerous business
class flight upgrades, model Qantas aircrafts, frequent flyer points, and tickets to sporting and entertainment events.
Touted as ‘the most exclusive club in the
country’, membership to the Chairman’s Lounge is still veiled in secrecy.

Even the entrances to each of the country’s six opulent VIP clubs – in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide,
Canberra and Perth airports – are suitably
discreet.
Once inside, however, the designer lounges are noticeably
luxurious, with free à la carte fine dining, table service,
a decadent selection of wines and Champagne and a discreet
army of dedicated lounge attendants.
Virgin Airlines has its own version of the VIP enclave, the ‘Beyond’ lounge.
Only a handful of federal politicians have relinquished their membership to the
Qantas Chairman’s Lounge in the wake of the furore.
The select few to take a principled stand on the
issue include South Australian senator Barbara Pocock and former
Wallabies star turned ACT senator David Pocock, along
with MPs Stephen Bates, Queensland Green Elizabeth Watson-Brown, and
Monique Ryan, a Teal from Victoria.
Geoffrey Watson SC, a former counsel assisting the Independent Commission Against Corruption and a director of the Centre
for Public Integrity, has implored all politicians and policymakers to follow suit.
‘There are certain positions in life where you cannot take Chairman’s
Club membership,’ he said.
‘You’re taking public money for the job and you
are supposed to represent the public. Why not sit with them while you’re waiting for a plane?’

The temporary Vinnies locations have been set up around
Victoria to help shoppers get through the cost of living crisis ravaging the
country.
Vinnies, or the St Vincent de Paul Society, is a charity that
works to provide support and assistance to people in need.
Most items are brand new stock donated by corporate partners including Christmas decorations.
Popular bargains include $10 large jars of Biscoff, $2 bags of
Red Rock Deli chips, and discounted shoes from Boston Bros.
Shoppers will find men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing, shoes from top brands, and even electrical goods
at the Vinnies pop-up locations.
Many have purchased vacuums, air fryers, Adidas shoes, printers,
and kitchen knives from previous pop-up shops.
There is presently a location in Ascot Vale which is open until 3 November, and another in Boronia which will remain open until Christmas – or until stock runs out.

and a corporate titan, as he battles claims the Qantas boss was his ‘personal
travel agent’ for free flights and upgrades.
However that characterization of the relationship was at odds with that made by
Mr Joyce, who said he was ‘good mates’ with Mr Albanese and had been ‘for years’.
In the wake of the explosive claims that the Prime
Minister had Mr Joyce arrange free tickets and upgrades, Mr Albanese distanced himself from the Qantas chief.
When asked about about their relationship on Sunday Mr
Albanese implied it was purely in a professional capacity,
having been Transport Minister and shadow transport
spokesperson before becoming Prime Minister.
‘He (Joyce) was the CEO of the national airline …
I had the same relationship with him that I have with John Borghetti as
the CEO of Virgin,’ Mr Albanese said.
That assessment was at odds with the many photos showing Mr Albanese and
Mr Joyce apparently greatly enjoying each other’s company.
Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce were pictured in high spirits on the red carpet at the Qantas 100th Gala Dinner in March last year.
In photos from the event, Mr Joyce proudly walks the red carpet with one arm around the prime minister and
the other around Mr Albanese’s partner, Jodie Haydon.
Just five months later, in August, a smiling Mr Albanese attended Qantas’s unveiling of it’s special ‘Yes 23′ emblazoned
airplanes for the Voice referendum.

Mr Joyce was seen touching Mr Albanese’s arm,

During a Senate hearing in September 2023, Mr Joyce said he had been ‘friends for years’ with Mr Albanese.
Asked about why he gifted Mr Albanese’s son Nathan a membership to
the prestigious and exclusive Chairman’s Lounge Mr Joyce
refused to confirm or deny but talked up his relationship with the
Prime Minister.
‘I’ve been good mates with Albo for some time,’ Mr Joyce said.
However, the then Qantas CEO refused to say whether he lobbied
the Prime Minister on the controversial decision to lock competitor
Qatar Airways out of domestic routes.
It has since emerged in a new book about Qantas, The Chairman’s Lounge, by former Australian Financial Review
columnist Joe Aston that Ms Haydon is also a Chairman’s Lounge

Reports have emerged in a new book Mr Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy from Qantas and he would liaise personally with
the former airline boss for them.
Aston also alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce while in his various parliamentary jobs to ask for special upgrades for
himself or his family.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights Mr
Albanese received upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included
overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu, with
some being for holidays.
Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that the London flights was for work purposes
and all were ‘declared in the appropriate way’.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has leapt on the accusations describing Mr Albanese as being the ‘best friend’ of Mr Joyce.
Mr Dutton told Sky News on Monday night it was ‘strange’ Mr Albanese had
directly contacted Mr Joyce to request upgrades while holding a regulatory position in the transport sector.
‘If you’re the Transport Minister and you’re picking up
the phone to one of the most important stakeholders in the portfolio asking for a free upgrade,
then again, I think the Prime Minister would be able to answer
those questions more effectively than anyone else because I’m
not aware of anyone else having done it,’ Mr Dutton said.
It has since emerged that Ms Haydon also has membership of the Qantas Chairman’s
Lounge
The Prime Minister denied frequently asking Mr Joyce
for upgrades on Tuesday at press conference in the NSW city of Newcastle.
‘The only discussions that I can recall with Alan Joyce certainly were not discussed through calls
– we discussed the first flight from Australia to Dubai on the
A380,’ he said.
‘I’ve declared everything in accordance with all of the rules.’
Aston was asked on Monday night by ABC interviewer
Sarah Ferguson about how confident he was that Mr Albanese had made calls personally to Mr Joyce for upgrades.
‘I am very comfortable with my sourcing,’ Aston said.
Asked whether he thought Mr Albanese had been influenced by Mr Joyce’s lobbying
to block UAE airline Qatar domestically Aston said it was ‘implausible’ to
think that the Prime Minister’s office had nothing to do with the
decision.
Mr Albanese’s son Nathan, 24, has reportedly also been granted access to
the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge (pictured, Mr Albanese and son Nathan in May, 2022)
‘It’s very hard to imagine a decision of any political sensitivity in the
Albanese government that would not go through the Prime Minister’s office,’ Aston replied.
He noted the opening up of the Australian domestic market Qatar
had seemingly been sailing through with Transport Minister Catherine
King speaking warmly about the proposal until ‘everything changed’ to
stop it dead in tracks.
Ms King repeatedly denied in parliament the decision to block Qatar
was due to Qantas lobbying her or any Labor colleagues.
Despite Mr Albanese claiming he declared every upgrade received from Qantas
the Australian Financial Review reported on Tuesday that he failed to
do for his former wife Carmel Tebbutt when the two traveled together.

struggle to afford even an economy airfare. They’d never be
able to afford the luxury of business class.
It’s out of our reach,’ she said.
‘Can Albanese truly be impartial when it comes to making decisions about Qantas when he’s been getting tens
of thousands of dollars worth of free upgrades to business class?
The revelations puts the decision he made as transport minister
and prime minister under a cloud.
‘Aside from the integrity issues, this revelation is also politically lethal.
Albanese took care to curate a self-image of
a housing commission boy who made it. But now the perception is cementing of
a long-term pollie enjoying the perks of public office.’
Another awkward paradox of Mr Albanese’s apparent close
relationship with Mr Joyce is that the Labor leader in a trade unionist
advocate while Qantas attempted to break the power of the Transport Workers Union by sacking 1700 staff during Covid.
The sacking has since been ruled illegal by Federal Court
in a case brought by the union with Qantas facing possible hundreds of thousands in compensation payouts.
The friendship however did find one perhaps unlikely defender in semi-retired 3AW radio star Neil Mitchell.
‘Quick test: upgrade Albo is a bad look,’
Mitchell wrote on X.
‘But does anybody believe he was seriously compromised by having
Alan Joyce as a bestie? Time to rewrite rules governing politicians.’

it also has to be the most efficient, with Qantas offering the most routes between major cities.
MPs are banned from accruing frequent flyer points on taxpayer-funded trips like ordinary Aussies can, but they
can can receive lifetime status credits, which allows access to
airport lounges and flight upgrades.
‘How else can one explain the extraordinary dominance of Qantas in securing bookings
by parliamentarians and their staff?’ Myriam Robin wrote
in an opinion piece for the Australian Financial Review.
‘There’s nothing like accruing status credits on someone else’s
dime.’
Transport Minister Catherine King has since committed to a review of flight bookings by government officials which will be conducted

10 December 2024Jack Miller believes he is lucky to have walked away from
a horror crash on the opening lap of MotoGP’s Malaysian Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit on Sunday.
The Australian motorcycle star was left thanking his lucky
stars after his early crash on Sunday as his racing helmet struck the rear
tyre of Fabio Quartararo’s Yamaha before Joan Mir’s Honda then ran over his legs.
The accident happened on the opening lap after the Queenslander’s
Red Bull KTM got tangled up with his teammate Brad Binder, and it
ended up leaving the 29-year-old motionless on the track while Binder and Quartararo were able to walk away from the red-flagged scene.

There was huge relief all around the circuit as Miller was rushed to the medical centre at the
arena and pictures flashed up later of the ever popular Aussie
walking back to the garage.
“Lucky to walk away from that one today. Thank you to everyone for the kind messages,” Miller later wrote on Instagram, also reporting to
Mir that he had suffered only a bruised leg.
Red Bull KTM said in a statement later: “Today was a stark reminder of the risks our riders face every time they line up on the grid.
“Both Brad and Jack were involved in a serious incident on the first lap,
but we’re beyond grateful they’re both okay and walking away
from the crash relatively unharmed.”
Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia went on to win the race ahead of Jorge Martin, whose lead over the Italian is now 24 points ahead of the season’s final race.

Of the three involved in the crash, Quartararo was the only one to restart with a spare bike, as he came home sixth.
“I had a big touch with Brad or Jack, then I was flying and after that I don’t really remember.
Those things can happen,” he said.
Mir admitted he had been worried when he saw the ambulance on the track with medics treating Miller.
“I didn’t know how he was, I ran over his legs and I was worried
for him,” Mir said.
“I went to his box (after the race) and he said, ‘No, I’m fine, I’m fine’.”
Miller’s crash was the latest setback in what has been a disappointing season for the four-time race winner, as he lies 14th in the championship standings.

Five years have passed since the triumphant opening of
Joker at the Venice Film Festival. I still vividly
remember reeling out of a morning screening,
dazzled less by the unforgiving glare of the Venetian sun than by the
movie we’d just been shown.

Last night, here in Venice, came the world premiere of the sequel, Joker: Folie a Deux The
director is again Todd Phillips, with Joaquin Phoenix once more in the title role,
this time joined by Lady Gaga as what I suppose we must call the love interest, although that would undervalue her wonderful
performance.
The film is audaciously different in style from the original, not quite as electrifying,
but bold and brilliant all the same.
It begins with a kind of sinister jauntiness with a Joker animation in the style of a Tom & Jerry cartoon, to show that since
the events of the first movie, Arthur Fleck along with his murderous alter ego has become a cultural phenomenon in Gotham City.
There has even been a TV movie about him.

But Arthur is behind bars, waiting to see whether he will be judged sane enough to stand trial for murder, and
in the meantime enjoying his celebrity status both with fellow
prisoners and even the warders, one of whom, a sadistic Irishman played by Brendan Gleeson, feeds him cigarettes in return for jokes.
Lady Gaga plays Lee, a fellow inmate on her way, we suppose, to becoming Joker’s girlfriend Harley Quinn.
The pair hit it off at a music therapy class,
and are soon mutually smitten, but Lee makes it clear that she loves the dangerously charismatic Joker,
‘clown prince of crime’, not the gloomily introspective Arthur.
Indeed, identity confusion is the theme of this film, which delves even deeper than the original into schizophrenia and other types of mental illness.
It’s been said that Folie a Deux is a musical. It’s not, but music looms large as an expression of Arthur and Lee’s burgeoning love for one another.
It is while watching Vincente Minnelli’s 1953 classic The Band Wagon that Lee, who claims to have been imprisoned for arson, sets fire to their prison wing.
The ensuing chaos provides an excellent opportunity to escape, yet
Phillips and his co-writer Scott Silver toy with our expectations throughout;
each time we anticipate which way the narrative is going to go, it confounds us by wheeling off in another direction.
The music is a constant, though, with Lady Gaga giving her
interpretation of lovely old Burt Bacharach
and even Motown numbers, and Phoenix more than holding his own. There are also a couple of swooning dance
routines that make Arthur and Lee look like psychotic versions of Ryan Gosling and Emma
Stone in La La Land.
Eventually, after Arthur’s high-profile TV appearance with
a smug interviewer played by Steve Coogan, it is time for the trial, with all of Gotham gripped by the subject of multiple personality
disorder.
Is Arthur the defendant accused of five murders, or is it Joker?
His kindly lawyer (Catherine Keener) wants to make clear it
is Arthur; Lee just as urgently wants him to identify as Joker.
