An invitation to lunch at Caviar Kaspia was, once upon a time, an offer you simply didn’t refuse.
Providing, of course, that the bill was on someone else.
Because caviar, smeared on blinis or piled high on baked potatoes, sure
didn’t come cheap. There may have been other things on the menu,
but no one paid them much heed. This was all about lashings of the black stuff.
Caviar Kaspia’s signature baked potato and caviar:
‘there are few better dishes on earth…only the price, at just under £150,
is ridiculous’
Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades
back. And that site, hidden down a smart
Mayfair mews, was taken over by Gavin Rankin (who
used to be the boss), and transformed into the brilliant Bellamy’s.
It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand, went quiet.
Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club
in another Mayfair backstreet. But a £2,000 a year membership fee
proved hard to swallow, meaning the doors were opened to the great unwashed.
Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit
near empty – dining room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze of a stern painting of a very stern man. The
soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by the glare of table lamps, indecorously bright, while
a loud soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats
throbs in the background. The whole place is scented with gilded
ennui.
Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty,
clad in diaphanous couture. They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely
via camera phone. Pose, click, check, filter, post.
Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.
We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur that tastes far better than it ought to.
Next door, a large table fills with a glut of
the noisily, glossily confident.
We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent charm and charisma that had
she burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’, we would have barely blinked.
Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides whipped
savagely hard with butter and sour cream, are a study in tuber art.
A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar, gently saline, raises them to the sublime.
Only the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous. But there are few better dishes on earth.
I’d eat this every day if I could. But I can’t. Obviously.
That’s the problem with caviar. One taste is never enough.

What sports have the letter ‘R’ at the end of them?
LUXEMBOURG, Oct 7 (Reuters) – Germany’s economic model is
not broken but Europe’s biggest economy has lost competitiveness
over the past decade, German Finance Minister Christian Lindner said on Monday.
“We can’t be satisfied with the economic developments in Germany,” he told journalists ahead of a Eurogroup meeting.
The German economy is expected to contract by 0.2% in 2024, an economy ministry spokesperson said
on Monday, cutting the forecast from a previous projection of 0.3% growth this year.
If realised, this would be the second consecutive year of
contraction for Germany’s economy, which was the weakest
among its large euro zone peers last year with a 0.3% decline in gross domestic product.
Lindner said the government was introducing supply-side measures to try to return the economy to growth.
“After these reforms, Germany will have more competitiveness again,” Lindner said, adding that the growth initiative was just a first step for an economic turnaround, “but we have to build on it.”
AMBITION NEEDED
Lindner said “ambition” was needed to keep EU public finances in order, or to put them back in order where necessary.
“I can only encourage everyone to implement structural reforms and to make unpopular decisions,” Lindner said.
“What seems to be unpopular at the moment is the willingness to take responsibility for the next generation and for the stability of the European Union as a whole.”
Lindner said he could not comment on the French budget plans because he had not had the chance to talk with his French colleagues yet, but he would do so on Monday evening.
“We should all realise that the credibility of public finances vis-à-vis the capital markets is not to be trifled with,” Lindner said.
“We must credibly reduce our deficits and our debt so that we can continue to finance ourselves well and in a stable manner.”

US seeking ways to engage with Syrian rebel leaders now in charge
By Maya Gebeily, Michelle Nichols
DAMASCUS/NEW YORK, Dec 10 (Reuters) –
An Israeli military incursion into Syria has reached about 25 km (16 miles) southwest of Damascus, Syrian security sources said on Tuesday, after Israel seized a buffer zone in southern Syria and launched air strikes on Syrian army and air
bases overnight.
Israel’s military operation into Syria comes two days after
the lightning overthrow of
President Bashar al-Assad
by a rebel alliance left Syrians, regional countries and world powers
nervous about what comes next.
A Syrian security source said Israeli troops reached Qatana, which
is 10 km (six miles) into Syrian territory east of a demilitarised zone separating Israeli-occupied Golan Heights from Syria.
The Israeli military declined comment.
Israel has said it will not become involved in conflict in Syria and
that its seizure of the buffer zone was a defensive
move.
Egypt, Qatar and Saudi Arabia have condemned the incursion. Saudi Arabia said the move would “ruin Syria’s chances of restoring security”.
Regional security sources and officers within the
now fallen Syrian army said heavy Israeli airstrikes continued against military installations and airbases
across Syria overnight, destroying dozens of helicopters and jets,
as well as Republican Guard assets in and around Damascus.
The rough tally of 200 raids had left nothing of the Syrian army’s assets,
they said. Israel said its airstrikes would carry on for
days but told the U.N. Security Council that it was not intervening in Syria’s conflict.
It said it had taken “limited and temporary measures” solely to protect its security.
The United Nations Security Council met behind closed
doors late on Monday, and diplomats said they were still in shock at
how quickly Assad’s overthrow unfolded over 12 days, after a 13-year civil war that was locked in stalemate for years.
“Everyone was taken by surprise, everyone, including the members of the council. So we have to wait and see and watch … and evaluate how the situation will develop,” Russian U.N.
Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia told reporters after the body met.
Russia played a major role in supporting Assad’s government and helping it fight the rebels.
The Syrian leader fled Damascus for Moscow on Sunday, ending
more than 50 years of brutal rule by his family.
With the mood in Damascus still celebratory, Assad’s prime minister,
Mohammed Jalali, on Monday agreed to hand power to the rebel-led Salvation Government, an administration based
in rebel-held territory in northwest Syria.
HOLLOWED OUT The main rebel commander Ahmed al-Sharaa, better known as
Abu Mohammed al-Golani, met with Jalali and Vice President Faisal Mekdad to discuss the transitional government,
a source familiar with the discussions told Reuters. Jalali said the handover could take days to carry out.
Al Jazeera television reported the transitional authority would be headed by
Mohamed al-Bashir, who has headed the Salvation Government.
The steamroller advance of the militia alliance headed by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a former al-Qaeda affiliate,
was a generational turning point for the Middle East.
The civil war that began in 2011 killed hundreds of thousands, caused one of the biggest refugee crises of modern times
and left cities bombed to rubble, countryside depopulated and the economy hollowed out by global sanctions.
But the rebel alliance has not communicated plans for
Syria’s future, and there is no template for such a transition in the fractious region.
Oil prices rose more than 1% on Monday, partly on concerns that
instability in Syria, which is not a major oil producer, could raise regional tensions, analysts said.
“This is an incredible moment for the Syrian people,” Deputy
U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Robert Wood said in New York.
“We’re really focused right now on trying to see where the situation goes. Can there be a governing authority in Syria that respects the rights and dignities of the Syrian population?” The U.S.
was seeking ways to engage with Syrian rebel groups and is reaching out to partners in the region such as Turkey
to start informal diplomacy, Washington said.
Qatari diplomats spoke with HTS on Monday, an official briefed on the developments told Reuters, as regional states race to open contact with the group.
There were tentative signs of a return to order. Syria’s
banks will reopen on Tuesday, and the oil ministry called on all employees in the sector to head
to work on Tuesday, adding that protection would be provided
to ensure their safety.
Reuters reporters saw four mini-buses arriving at the Central Bank of Syria, with employees disembarking
and walking into the building for their first day
of work since Assad´s fall.
“It´s a new shift, it´s a new day, a new year, a new life,” said
Sumayra al-Mukli. Golani has vowed to rebuild Syria, and HTS has spent
years trying to soften its image to reassure foreign nations and
minority groups within Syria.
But fears of reprisals remained. HTS said it will not hesitate to hold security
and army officers involved in torturing the Syrian people accountable,
describing them as criminals and murderers.
“We will release a list that includes the names of the most senior officials involved in the torturing of the Syrian people,” Golani said in a statement.
“Rewards will be offered to those who will provide information about senior army and security officers involved in war crimes.”
HTS is designated as a terrorist organisation by many
states and the U.N., and its governing credentials are uncertain.
“Syrians are looking forward to establishing a state of freedom, equality, rule of law, democracy, and we will join efforts to rebuild our country, to rebuild what was destroyed, and to rebuild the future, better future of Syria,” Syria’s U.N.
Ambassador Koussay Aldahhak told reporters.

NEW YORK (AP) – “Venom: The Last Dance” showed less bite than expected at
the box office, collecting $51 million in its opening weekend, according to studio
estimates Sunday, significantly down from the alien symbiote franchise´s previous
entries.
Projections for the third “Venom” film from Sony Pictures had been closer to $65 million. More concerning, though,
was the drop off from the first two “Venom” films. The
2018 original debuted with $80.2 million, while the 2021 follow-up,
“Venom: Let There Be Carnage,” opened with $90 million even as theaters
were still in recovery mode during the pandemic.
“The Last Dance,” starring Tom Hardy as a journalist who shares his body with an alien entity also voiced by Hardy, could still turn a profit for Sony.
Its production budget, not accounting for promotion and marketing, was about $120 million – significantly less than most comic-book films.
But “The Last Dance” is also performing better overseas. Internationally, “Venom: The Last Dance” collected $124 million over the weekend, including $46 million over five days of release in China.
That´s good enough for one of the best international weekends of the
year for a Hollywood release.
Still, neither reviews (36% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) nor audience scores (a franchise-low “B-” CinemaScore) have been good for the film scripted by Kelly Marcel
and Hardy, and directed by Marcel.
The low weekend for “Venom: The Last Dance”
also likely insures that superhero films will see their lowest-grossing
year in a dozen years, not counting the pandemic year of
2020, according to David A. Gross, a film consultant who publishes
a newsletter for Franchise Entertainment.
This image released by Sony Pictures shows Tom Hardy in a scene from “Venom: The Last Dance.” (Columbia-Sony Pictures via AP)
Following on the heels of the “Joker: Folie à Deux” flop,
Gross estimates that 2024 superhero films will gross about
$2.25 billion worldwide. The only upcoming entry is Marvel´s “Kraven the Hunter,” due out Dec.
13. Even with the $1.3 billion of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” the
genre hasn´t, overall, been dominating the way
it once did. In 2018, for example, superhero films accounted for more than $7 billion in global ticket sales.
Last week´s top film, the Paramount Pictures horror sequel “Smile 2,” dropped to
second place with $9.4 million. That brings
its two-week total to $83.7 million worldwide.
The weekend´s biggest success story might have been “Conclave,” the papal thriller starring
Ralph Fiennes and directed by Edward Berger (“All Quiet on the Western Front”).
The Focus Features release, a major Oscar contender, launched with
$6.5 million in 1,753 theaters.
That put “Conclave” into third place, making it the rare adult-oriented drama to make a mark theatrically.
Some 77% of ticket buyers were over the age of 35, Focus said.
With a strong opening and stellar reviews, “Conclave” could continue to gather momentum both with moviegoers and Oscar voters.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S.
and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be
released Monday.
1. “Venom: The Last Dance,” $51 million.
2. “Smile 2,” $9.4 million.
3. “Conclave,” $6.5 million.
4. “The Wild Robot,” $6.5 million.
5. “We Live in Time,” $4.8 million.
6. “Terrifier 3,” $4.3 million.
7, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” $3.2 million.
8. “Anora,” $867,142.
9. “Piece by Piece,” $720,000.
10. “Transformers One,” $720,000.

The existence of an exclusive hideaway for the country’s movers and shakers where secret deals were done in private luxury first
exploded into the public eye back in 2007.
Back then, the fact that Qantas spent hundreds of thousands of dollars
wining and dining the nation’s political elite in ultra-exclusive VIP lounges was
relatively unknown.
It was a time before Alan Joyce’s tenure as the CEO
of Qantas had even started, when he was boss of the comparatively lowly budget airline, Jetstar.
And unlike Anthony Albanese’s current slide in the polls leading up to an election in next year,
the prospects back in 2007 were rosy for Labor.
The election that was looming was the ‘Kevin 07’ landslide that would see Kevin Rudd become prime minister and
John Howard lose his own seat.
The issue which blew open the ‘guilty secret’ of the Chairman’s Lounge then wasn’t about a prime minister’s
privileges, although John Howard and Kevin Rudd were certainly both members during their terms as PM.
But when broadcaster Steve Price – himself a long time Chairman’s Lounge member – revealed
a politically charged remark made within the club’s hallowed walls,
the cat was out of the bag.
The political revelation – a comment by ex-rock star
turned senator Peter Garrett that Labor would change the policies it campaigned on if it won government
– did not deter his party from romping in on election day.
In contrast, the scandal currently engulfing Anthony
Albanese about his Chairman’s Lounge membership and that of his ex-wife Carmel Tebbutt, and their son Nathan could bring down the prime minister.
The exclusive Qantas Chairman’s Lounge (above) has been a well-kept secret for years, but it exploded into
the public conscience in 2007 as the result of a political furore
Broadcaster Steve Price revealed he had been a Chairman’s Lounge member since 2002 during a row before the 2007 election won by
Kevin Rudd which let the cat out of the bag about the VIP club
The existence of the lounge was so little known back in 2007 that in defending his
disclosure of Garrett’s remark, Steve Price
had to explain what the private enclave actually was.
In a first person piece he wrote: ‘The Chairman’s Lounge is a separate frequent
flyers lounge away from the crowded normal Qantas Club.
‘As its name implies, the people given access to it are approved by the Qantas chairman, Margaret Jackson.
‘I have been a Chairman’s Lounge member since 2002.’
In his opinion piece, Price also revealed TV entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins was also a member of lounge.
Wilkins had also been inside at the time and was his only witness to the remark Price said Garrett had made.
Other prominent media figures, such as 60 Minutes reporters,
actors and performers, and well-known writers and sports people are said to be among the
lounge’s exclusive membership of around 6000.
Price went on to defend himself for reporting
what some claimed was a confidential conversation in a private place,
but which exposed him to criticism over his own membership
for allegedly promoting Qantas on his radio show.
Back in 2007, Alan Joyce (left) was boss of the comparatively lowly budget airline Jetstar,
and then Qantas CEO Geoff Dixon (right) had the power over who made the cut to the Chairman’s Lounge
One observer has described the relationship bet6ween leading politicians such as PM Anthony Albanese and the former Qantas
CEO Alan Joyce (above) as ‘alarmingly cosy’
‘Why on earth is Qantas giving a controversial shock jock membership of
its Chairman’s Lounge, which is supposedly to enable our elite politicians
and business leaders some privacy from the hoi polloi?’ demanded Crikey reporter Stephen Mayne at the
time.
‘The Chairman’s Lounge is meant to be all about discretion and confidentiality,’ he said, accusing Price of breaking ‘a confidence’.
The following year, before he was succeeded as Qantas CEO by Alan Joyce, Geoff Dixon was the sole gatekeeper of entry into the club’s hushed confines.
Qantas Chairman’s Lounge membership was ‘so exclusive that you
have to be personally invited by the airline’s chieftain’,
Nine newspapers reported in 2008.
‘A marvellous benefit of lounge membership is that the mega rich and powerful avoid
having to mingle with the riffraff who will be travelling cattle class.
‘Having said that, members of the ultra-exclusive club have included
Pauline Hanson.
‘Another lounge member is Brad Cooper, who is currently enjoying a prolonged exposure to cattle-class
in Kirkconnell Correctional Centre.’ (Cooper was the
former HIH insurance executive jailed for eight years on fraud and bribery offences).
Membership of the elite lounge is confined to about 6000 Australians including politicians from both sides, senior public servants, TV
stars and actors
The ‘scandal’ currently engulfing Anthony Albanese about his Chairman’s
Lounge membership and that of his ex-wife Carmel Tebbutt, and their son Nathan could bring down the prime
minister (above the PM with partner Jodie Haydon and ex-Qantas CEO Alan Joyce)
The report noted that politicians declaring membership of the lounge ‘which most of their spouses got too’ in their pecuniary interests that year included Liberal MPs of the
day, Philip Ruddock, Bob Baldwin and Andrew Southcott.
Labor MPs with lounge privileges included Tanya Plibersek, Bob McMullan, and Sharon Grierson, and Martin Ferguson declared a bottle
of Grange hermitage as a gift from Qantas, as did Liberal, Christopher Pyne.
Asked if all MPs got the captain’s pick from Geoff Dixon, the airline’s spokesperson told Nine: ‘We like to retain a bit of mystery. Membership is by invitation only and it is reviewed periodically.’
Fast forward to today, and nearly every single federal politician in the country has accepted free membership of the
controversial, invitation-only lounge with one even describing it as an ‘entitlement’.
Qantas and the Albanese government recently denied the ‘very, very high-end perk’ gives the airline
a disproportionate level of influence over the country’s politicians.
They were commenting ahead of the launch of the new book The Chairman’s Lounge
by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston, which has stirred up the controversy.
A Daily Mail Australia audit of the members’ interest registers – in both
Federal Parliament’s House of Representatives and the Senate
– revealed almost 93 per cent of the nation’s leaders have been ‘gifted’ membership to the lavish, all-inclusive lounge.
Mr Albanese has defended himself by saying he declared all his benefits in pecuniary
interest statements.
At a press conference this week, he repeated that all of his upgrades
‘have been declared as appropriate. What’s appropriate is
transparency.’
Apart from the PM, members include every one of
his 22-person Cabinet, his seven-person Outer Ministry and all 12 assistant ministers.
PM Anthony Albanese and every member of his 22-person Cabinet, his

ministers are members of the exclusive Chairman’s Lounge
Entry to the country’s six opulent VIP clubs
are suitably discreet, but once inside, the designer lounges offer free à la carte
fine dining, table service and a discreet army of dedicated lounge attendants
On the Coalition side of parliament, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, deputy leader
David Littleproud and former deputy Barnaby Joyce are also among the swathes of politicians who have
disclosed they have taken up free membership to the contentious club.
Bill Shorten is a member, Tanya Plibersek is still a
member and so is Teal MP, Zali Steggall.
Last year it was reported that Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairwoman Gina Cass-Gottlieb and Australian Securities
and Investments Commission chairman Joe Longo and some of their deputies are members of the Chairman’s Lounge despite regulating the airline.
Senior public servants in the club included
Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet secretary Glyn Davis, deputy secretaries Nadine Williams,
Liz Hefren-Webb, Rachel Bacon and ambassador to Beijing, Scott Dewar.
Other Qantas freebies bestowed on members include numerous business class flight upgrades, model Qantas aircrafts, frequent flyer points, and tickets
to sporting and entertainment events.
Touted as ‘the most exclusive club in the country’, membership to the Chairman’s
Lounge is still veiled in secrecy.
The new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review
columnist Joe Aston (above) has stirred up the controversy
Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairwoman Gina

Even the entrances to each of the country’s six opulent
VIP clubs – in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra and Perth airports – are suitably discreet.
Once inside, however, the designer lounges are noticeably luxurious, with free à la carte fine dining, table service,
a decadent selection of wines and Champagne and a discreet army of dedicated lounge attendants.
Virgin Airlines has its own version of the VIP enclave,
the ‘Beyond’ lounge.
Only a handful of federal politicians have relinquished their
membership to the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge
in the wake of the furore.
The select few to take a principled stand on the issue include South
Australian senator Barbara Pocock and former Wallabies star
turned ACT senator David Pocock, along with MPs Stephen Bates,
Queensland Green Elizabeth Watson-Brown, and Monique Ryan, a Teal from Victoria.
Geoffrey Watson SC, a former counsel assisting the Independent Commission Against Corruption and a director of the Centre for
Public Integrity, has implored all politicians and policymakers to follow suit.
‘There are certain positions in life where you cannot take Chairman’s Club membership,’ he said.
‘You’re taking public money for the job and you are supposed to represent the public.
Why not sit with them while you’re waiting for a plane?’

28 November 2024An invitation to lunch at Caviar Kaspia was, once upon a time, an offer you simply didn’t refuse.

15 December 2024NEW YORK (AP) – “Venom: The Last Dance” showed less bite than expected at
the box office, collecting $51 million in its opening weekend, according to studio
estimates Sunday, significantly down from the alien symbiote franchise´s previous

15 December 2024The existence of an exclusive hideaway for the country’s movers and shakers where secret deals were done in private luxury first
exploded into the public eye back in 2007.
PM Anthony Albanese and every member of his 22-person Cabinet, his
seven-person Outer Ministry and all 12 assistant
ministers are members of the exclusive Chairman’s Lounge
Cass-Gottlieb and Australian Securities and Investments Commission chairman Joe
Longo are members despite regulating the airline
